🔁 The Monday Observation: You're Both in the Doorway — and Neither of You Is Walking Through
Let me paint you a picture of what I've been seeing in the data. Not a sad picture — a puzzling one. Because the pattern I'm about to describe isn't about rejection or disinterest or laziness. It's about two people who BOTH want to connect, who are BOTH showing up, and who are BOTH somehow stuck.
Here's the pattern:
Thread A: Person 1 says "Hi." Person 2 says "Hey." Person 1 says "Hi." Person 2 says "Hi." Thread ends. 🪦
Thread B: Person 1 says "Hey!" Person 2 says "Well hello there!!" (Two exclamation marks! Genuine enthusiasm! This is going somewhere!) Person 1 says… nothing. Thread ends. 🪦🪦
Thread C: Person 1 says "hello." Person 2 says "Hey." Person 1 says "how are you." Person 2 says "Good." Thread ends. 🪦🪦🪦
Do you see the pattern? Nobody is failing. Nobody is being rude, awkward, off-putting, or mean. Both people are showing up. Both people are responding. Both people are clearly interested enough to type something. And yet the conversation never actually starts.
It's like watching two people meet at a party, shake hands for four straight minutes, and then wander off in opposite directions because neither one said, "So what brings you here?"
The greeting is not the problem. The greeting is fine. The problem is that the greeting is where the conversation BEGINS — and for too many people, it's also where the conversation ENDS.
🔬 1) The Anatomy of a Greeting Loop: Why "Hi" — "Hey" — "Hi" Is the Conversational Equivalent of Running on a Treadmill
Let's dissect what's actually happening in a greeting loop, because understanding the mechanics is the first step to escaping them.
Act I — The Knock: Person A sends a greeting. "Hi!" / "Hey!" / "Hello!" This is perfectly fine. This is the knock on the door. The signal that says, "I exist, I've noticed you, I'm interested." ✊🚪
Act II — The Answer: Person B responds with a
