🏓 The Tuesday Diagnosis: You're Both Here, You're Both Trying, and You're Both Stuck in the World's Most Polite Staring Contest
Let me paint you a picture. Two people are on a dating app. Person A logs in and sends: "hi." Person B sees it and responds: "hey." Person A, feeling encouraged, writes back: "hi." Person B, now slightly confused, replies: "hm." Person A tries again: "ok." Person B volleys back: "k."
And there they are. Two human beings. Both present. Both typing. Both technically in a conversation. And yet somehow producing an exchange with less emotional content than a modem handshake from 1997.
This is what I'm calling the Greeting Loop — and it's one of the most common, most understandable, and most easily fixable problems in online dating. It happens not because people don't want to connect. It happens because nobody taught us what comes after "hello."
Think about it. From childhood, we're taught to greet people. "Say hi to Mrs. Johnson." "Wave to grandma." "What do you say when someone talks to you?" "Hello." Great. Excellent. Gold star. But nobody ever followed up with: "And now here's what you say AFTER the hello to turn this into an actual relationship." We were given the key to the front door and never shown the rest of the house. 🏠
🔄 1) The Anatomy of the Greeting Loop: Why "Hi" "Hey" "Hi" Is the Conversational Equivalent of Running on a Hamster Wheel
Before we fix this, let's understand it. Because the Greeting Loop isn't random — it's the predictable result of specific psychological forces. And once you see them, you can break free.
| Force | What's Happening Inside | What It Looks Like on Screen |
|---|---|---|
| 🛡️ Safety Testing | "I'll say something small and see if they respond. If they do, it's safe. But I'm not ready to say something real yet." | Multiple tiny messages: "hi" "test" "ok" "hm" — like dipping a toe in the pool over and over without ever getting in. |
| ⚖️ Reciprocity Matching | "They said one word, so I'll say one word. I don't want to be the one who's 'doing more' — that feels vulnerable." | A perfect mirror: "hi" / "hey" / "hi" / "hey" — neither person willing to be the first to escalate the investment. |
| 😶 Conversational Blank Page Syndrome | "I know I should say something, but I don't know WHAT to say. So I'll say 'hi' again because at least it's something." | Repeated greetings — the conversational equivalent of tapping the microphone and saying "Is this thing on?" |
| 🏃 Momentum Dependence | "I'm waiting for THEM to ask me something interesting. I greeted them — surely it's their turn to move this forward?" | Two people, both waiting, both expecting the other person to carry the conversation, both slowly dying of politeness. |
| 😰 Fear of Getting It Wrong | "What if I ask something weird? What if they think I'm too forward? What if my question is boring? Better to say nothing meaningful and stay safe." | An
