☘️ The St. Patrick's Day Connection (Bear With Me)
Quick St. Patrick's Day thought before we dive in, because I never miss a chance to stretch a holiday metaphor until it begs for mercy:
St. Patrick's Day is one of those holidays that has become almost entirely about the surface. Green shirts. Green beer. "Kiss me, I'm Irish" pins worn by people who have never been to Ireland. The actual story — a man who was kidnapped, enslaved, escaped, and then voluntarily went back to the place that had imprisoned him because he felt called to help the people there — is extraordinary, complicated, and deeply human. But we skip over all that because the green hat is easier.
That's what copy-paste messages are. They're the green hat of online dating. They look like participation from the outside. They check the box of "I reached out." But they skip the actual substance — the part where you engage with who someone really is — in favour of something fast and generic and forgettable. Today we put down the green hat and pick up the real conversation. 🍀
📬 1) The Junk Mail Problem: Why Your Inbox Knows the Difference Between a Letter and a Flyer — And So Does Every Person You Message
Let me paint you a picture that I think will make this click instantly.
You come home after a long day. You check your mailbox. Inside, there are two things:
- 📄 Item 1: A printed flyer. "Dear Homeowner, we'd love to offer you our services! Call us today!" It's addressed to nobody. It was sent to every house on the street. You can tell because the one your neighbour got is identical. You glance at it for half a second. You recycle it. You don't feel anything about it except mild annoyance that it exists.
- ✉️ Item 2: A handwritten letter. Your name is on the envelope. Inside, someone has written a few sentences that reference something specific — your garden, your dog, the book they saw you reading on the porch. It's short. It's imperfect. The handwriting is a little wobbly. But it was clearly written to you, by someone who actually noticed you exist.
Which one do you read? Which one do you keep? Which one makes you feel like a human being and which one makes you feel like an address?
That's the difference between a personalised first message and a copy-paste greeting. And every single person on a dating app can feel the difference. They can't always articulate it. They might not even consciously register it. But somewhere in the half-second between opening your message and deciding whether to respond, their brain performs a lightning-fast calculation: "Was this written for me, or was I just on the list?"
- 📋 "Hello [name], mind meeting a new friend?" — Sent to me and apparently everyone else in a three-kilometre radius. Am I a person or a postcode?
- 📋 "Hi, how are you? I am hoping to meet someone on here." — Someone. Not me specifically. Someone. I'm someone. So is everybody else. This isn't an invitation to connect. It's a roll call.
- 📋 "Hello! Your profile caught my eye!" — Which part? What eye? What caught it? This tells me nothing except that you have eyes and my profile exists. I already knew both of those things.
- 📋 "Hey beautiful/handsome!" — You cannot possibly determine that from one photo and zero conversation. This is a compliment aimed at a demographic, not a person.
Generic messages communicate something you never intended to say. Generic messages tell the recipient they weren't worth an extra thirty seconds of thought. Generic messages feel like a net cast into the ocean, hoping to catch anything. Generic messages are, ultimately, invisible.
⚡ 2) The Efficiency Illusion: Why "Casting a Wide Net" Is Actually the Least Efficient Strategy in Online Dating
I know what some of you are thinking, because I can hear the objection forming from here: "But CompanioNita, if I send personalised messages to every person I'm interested in, it'll take forever! At least with copy-paste, I'm reaching more people! It's a numbers game!"
Okay. Let's do the maths on this. Real maths. The kind that hurts.
- 📊 You send the same "Hello, mind meeting a new friend?" to 10 people.
- ⏱️ Time investment: approximately 2 minutes total. (Copy. Paste. Send. Repeat.)
- 📩 Response rate for generic greetings on dating platforms: roughly 5-10
